A penalty that destroys part of a validator's stake for breaking the network's rules.
Slashing punishes provable misbehaviour, such as signing two conflicting blocks. It exists so that cheating costs more than it could ever earn. Honest validatorsValidator A participant in a proof-of-stake network who stakes coins and helps propose and confirm blocks. who are simply offline usually face small penalties, not slashing.
