Hard fork
Also: hard forks
A change to a blockchain's rules that all nodes must adopt to stay on the same network.
A hard fork loosens or changes the rules so that old software rejects new blocks. Planned forks deliver upgrades. Contentious ones can split a network in two, as with Bitcoin Cash in 2017.
